Local teacher, veteran, and Dad Justin Smith announces his candidacy for the Johnston School Board.
Get To Know Justin Smith
My name is Justin Smith, and my family and I are proud members of the Johnston community. As a parent, veteran, teacher, and Scout leader, I’ve seen firsthand how strong public schools shape not only our children but the entire community.
For over a decade, I’ve taught high school students in Economics, Government, and History, and I believe every student in Johnston deserves the best opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed.

What motivated you to run for the Johnston Board of Education?
I’m running because I believe Johnston schools can continue to be among the very best in Iowa by focusing on early learning, supporting teachers, and preparing students for college, careers, and the workforce of tomorrow. As both an educator and parent, I want to ensure we are giving every student a strong start and every teacher the tools they need to succeed.
What areas is the Johnston Board of Education having success and what areas do you believe need improvement?
Johnston has a long tradition of academic excellence, strong extracurricular activities, and a dedicated staff. Our community values education, and it shows in our students’ performance. That said, there’s more we can do to address teacher shortages, expand early learning opportunities, and prepare students for a changing economy where skills in technology, problem-solving, and communication are critical.
Where do you stand on public funding for private schools?
I believe public dollars should stay in public schools. Johnston families deserve to know that their tax dollars are strengthening our classrooms, teachers, and programs, not being diverted elsewhere. Strong public schools are the backbone of our community, and that’s where funding should remain.
Under the new Education Savings Account law, private schools now receive taxpayer funding without the same requirements for transparency, access, or accountability. If they are using public dollars, they should be held to the same standards as public schools, accepting all students and following the same rules. Anything less creates an uneven playing field.
Are You Able To Help The District Find Ways To Reduce Costs While Delivering The Best Education?
Yes. My experience as a veteran, teacher, and leader has taught me how to work within budgets while staying mission-focused. We can find efficiencies by strengthening partnerships, leveraging grants, and carefully evaluating spending, without sacrificing the quality of education Johnston is known for. Fiscal responsibility and educational excellence can and must go hand-in-hand.
In your opinion, how important are the arts to public education?
The arts are vital to a well-rounded education. Programs like band, choir, dance, theater, and visual arts don’t just enrich students’ lives; they build confidence, creativity, and teamwork skills that prepare them for life. I’ve seen how passionate Johnston families are about these programs, and I believe protecting and promoting the arts is essential to keeping our schools strong and our students engaged.
Final Thoughts From Justin Smith, Candidate for the Johnston School Board.
I’m running for the Johnston School Board because I believe in strong public schools that serve every student and strengthen our community. By expanding early learning, supporting teachers, and preparing students for the future, we can ensure Johnston remains a leader in education across Iowa. I will be a voice for families, educators, and taxpayers who want both excellence and accountability in our schools. On Election Day, I ask for your support to help build a stronger future for Johnston.
